A converter in it's simplest form,
provides nominal 12 volts DC from 120 volts AC (shore
power) for running loads and keeping the house battery full. When you plug
in or start the generator, the converter automatically takes over the DC
loads.
Some RV converters are built
in to the AC breaker power center. Most RV's come with a
single stage converter that are inadequate as a proper battery charger.
All deep cycle battery
manufacturers require multi-stage battery charging. Some manufacturers like
Progressive Dynamics and Iota offer modules to upgrade your converter to
a 3-stage charger. 3-stage chargers can charge your battery twice as fast
as single stage converters.
For long battery life and
faster charging, we recommend 3-stage converter/chargers that are designed to
fully maintain your house battery.
